I've found that displaying art in restaurants and shops works well. They welcome free art for their walls, and I'm able to reach an audience that may not go for the gallery scene. There is also no commission cut, or gallery fees which enables me to sell pieces for a price that's fair and affordable.
I've sold a few pieces that have been on display, but more than anything these pieces have really served a billboard for my art. These displays have been the best marketing and I've been blessed with a good number of commissions lately.
Its so gratifying when a piece impacts someone. The story or thought that inspires the piece often sparks another story in someone else's mind. Its been said that "there is nothing in the mind that the senses haven't yet experienced" so in a way art serves a conduit for stories. For that reason I don't think art has to be interpreted only as intended by the artist. Rather art should serve as a mirror.
