Lauren & Ellie

This is my Christmas present portrait for my sister Lauren with her baby Ellie. I was a huge perfectionist with this piece. I spent a good chunk of time on it, and can still find things I'd like to change. I am becoming more comfortable with charcoal though. The brown highlights are conte' which is a clay type chalk crayon thing. If you use it to make hard lines it becomes almost impossible to erase (especially with kneaded erasers which are used for charcoal) . Several years ago I bought a mat cutter. It has paid for itself so quickly, and it's been very nice for these custom sized pieces. Also it turned out to be really convenient for these last minute presents. I'm not sure what the turn around time is during the holidays but I doubt I would have had them all done in time at a shop.
