Resin Finish

This "Cosa Nostra" mobster painting was actually my first spray paint piece on canvas. The spray I used at the time didn't adhere well to the canvas, and has been cracking. Yesterday I re-painted the piece and am really happy with the result. I brought in some acrylic highlights and new spray.

The reason I fixed this piece up was so I could play with this new epoxy resin glaze technique. It's basically a hard, clear, glassy coat that makes the paints on the piece explode with color. It's a two part resin which requires a ton of stirring, is toxic, and pretty messy to work with. It's also gets pretty expensive. Don't get sucked into the special art resin, you can buy Super Glaze at Home Depot and it's the same exact thing. I still have some practice to do on the technique. I got the mixture and measurements perfect, but as the chemicals mix air bubbles are created. I got the majority out by running a pallet knife over it while still wet. I hear that you can use a blow torch as a solution as well. That will be the next thing I try.

So my next challenge is encaustic paints. They are being shipped as I type! Stay tuned for updates!
